I spent Easter in lovely St Ives. The weather was, as expected, showery, but that didn’t put us off donning our wellies and visiting the beach along with many other families, especially when the sun peeped from behind the clouds. I took a small sketch book and tiny pallet of watercolour paints and tried to capture the breezy seaside atmosphere and the simple childhood joys of playing with sea and sand.
A week ago we had the last session of ‘An Introduction to Creating Picture Books’, a course I run at the House of Illustration in Kings Cross. It’s an intensive ten week course designed to arm students with all the knowledge and skills to both write and illustrate their own picture book to present to publishers. These national days give me lots of inspiration!
I decided it would be a good discipline to create at least one new illustration to tweet once a week, be it a quick sketch or full colour when time allows. The Colour Collective is a brilliant twitter feed. They issue a new colour each week to be used as inspiration, and illustrators then tweet their work together at 19.30 on a Friday.
