Masterclass: Rough Out a Mini Picture Book

Learn the secrets of illustrating a picture book and make a rough mini book of your own.
Claire will explain how to tell a simple story with dynamic pictures, showing students how she went about illustrating The Snowbear by Sean Taylor. Students will learn about relevant layouts, composition and pace, as well as how to build drama, what points to illustrate in a story and how to go about doing so.

Using a simple given poem, you’ll create your own 16-page thumbnail storyboard which can be transformed into a mini book dummy. You will also learn more about Claire’s own work and find out how to present ideas to publishers.

Discover what makes for successful picture book characters, before creating your own with guidance from author/illustrator Claire Alexander.Spend time analysing and discussing contemporary picture book characters, considering whatmight make them appealing to children, adults and publishers and why.

You’ll learn how to write a character study and paint or collage your character in a colour vignette. Using watercolours as a medium Claire will demonstrate techniques to help you build textures to collage or paint with. You will also learn more about Claire’s own work and find out how to present ideas to publishers.
